Enhanced Recovery

Enhanced Recovery is a new approach to the preoperative, perioperative and postoperative care of patients undergoing surgery. It is a model of care that has the potential to have a significant impact in delivering enhanced quality of care at reduced costs.

Originally pioneered in Denmark by Professor Henrik Kehlet, Enhanced Recovery Programmes are now being championed in Europe by a growing number of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, allied health professionals and managers. It has already been shown to benefit patients undergoing colorectal, transplants, urological, gynaecological and orthopaedic surgery. There may well be wider applications in the future.

Enhanced Recovery has benefits for both patients and the health providers. It improves quality of care by helping patients to get better sooner after major surgery. Secondly, it reduces length of stay with obvious benefits to hospital budgets.

Whilst a multi-disciplinary programme, Enhanced Recovery relies heavily on the contribution of anaesthetists and the delivery of improved care, targeted pain therapy and fluid optimisation.

Implementation of Enhanced Recovery Programmes need local drive and commitment with informed expert clinical advice and managerial expertise.
